Eczema is a structural problem. Your skin is like a brick wall, the cells are the bricks and the mortar is the substance that joins the cells together. In eczema, the mortar is either not there or not good quality. This allows the water inside you to be "sucked out" through the gaps, it also allows allergens to get deep into the skin when they should be staying on top of the skin (staph, dust mites, grasses, pollens etc).

Generally, people with Atopic Dermatitis (often known as Eczema) suffer from dry, sensitive, red, itchy skin. The itch may be so bad that you scratch your skin until it bleeds, which can make your rash even worse, leading to even more inflammation and itching.
